Escape this summer with seminal Australian horror Lake Mungo from director Joel Anderson, which is set for its first ever UK Blu-ray release as a stunning Limited Edition box-set on June 7th 2021. It arrives with a host of new features from new interviews with cast and crew, video essays, brand new commentary tracks and archive material. All this is packaged within a beautiful slipcase with an incredible booklet that features rare behind the scenes photos and three collectors art cards.
Released in the shadow of Paranormal Activity, Joel Anderson’s debut feature Lake Mungo has lay forgotten for years. Many don’t know much about the story of this movie or it’s creator, and both are equally as interesting.
Many people consider this movie one of the scariest they have ever seen.
One of the greatest films ever made, horror or otherwise
- Rob Savage (Host 2020)
It’s no mistake that this movie has gotten so much press and love over the past year. As a horror fan it really makes me happy to see these lost movies get some of the attention they deserved at the time. While reading this article may seem to contradict what I’m about to say - watch this movie with little to know context. The plot set-up seems quite plain from the outside, which it is - however at no point is it boring. The documentary style really works especially with the extremely realistic acting throughout the film.
Scares are a LOT more subtle than horror fans may be used to but when they are revealed I’ll be surprised if the hairs on the back of your neck aren’t standing up! We get a movie that not only deals with the horror but also the grief of a family and the lengths they are willing to go to in an attempt to change their horrible reality.
Rarely do twists surprise me in movies anymore but the twists in this movie are unseen and crazy and will leave you wondering where can this story possibly go! Do yourself a favour and check out and support this incredible movie, it does not rely at all on cheap scares and really leaves a lasting impact on the audience and gets under the skin.
