Forgotten Horror - Maniac Cop 2 (1990)

A supernatural, maniac killer cop teams up with a Times Square serial killer.

Very rarely does it happen that we get a sequel in a franchise that even lives up to the original let alone surpass it. Maniac Cop 2 does a damn good job, Lustig and Cohen managed to create another forgotten horror classic with this movie.

The movie clearly had a bigger budget and really made great use of it with more expansive and exciting action set pieces. The story does thread over some of the original ideas but has enough differences to really set it apart and make it very enjoyable. We get a look at the mysterious story behind why Cordell has decided to kill and punish people which is enjoyable.

The casting is fantastic once again with the likes of Bruce Campbell returning and Leo Rossi playing the crazy and chattering serial killer partner of Cordell. The dynamic between the two works really well but for me, D’Zar still steals the show, zero dialogue but his presence is so immense it’s hard not to feel it.

Once again the night scenes are incredible and really make you feel the seedy underbelly of New York City before we even get introduced to this new killer team. The score and sounds were fantastic and added to every single scene. The body count is high while the movie isn’t overly gory (the police station scene is incredible) Makeup effects are second to none with Cordell’s face looking hideous, as it should considering he is dead!

I had the chance to interview Mr.Lustig recently in which he told me Maniac Cop 2 was his career highlight as far as directing, keep an eye out for that interview in it’s entirety over at www.classhorrorcast.com

Keep off the streets... because he's back on the beat.
