Modern-Day Masterpiece ‘The First Omen’ 2024

Nearly 50 years after the original, we venture back to re-discover the new story of how the anti-christ came to be..and what a ride it is! I’m sure much like myself you were probably either skeptical of this prequel so many years later - what could it do that hasn’t been done? What could it add? Why do we need to re-open this story so many moons after the original franchise?

Let me tell you, this movie does everything it intended to do and so much more. Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, who also co-wrote the screenplay and featuring an unforgettable score by Mark Korven, this cinematic gem has stood has managed to re-insert itself as a paragon of suspense, dread, and devilish intrigue to a franchise that seemed forgotten.

From the moment the film begins, the audience are ensnared in a web of ominous secrets. The story unfolds with meticulous pacing, gradually building tension until it reaches a crescendo of pure terror. Every single scene drips with an eerie atmosphere, enhanced by masterful cinematography and haunting imagery that lingers in the mind of the viewer long after the credits roll.

At the heart of ‘The First Omen’ lies a very gripping narrative that explores the age old battle between good and evil and some very real undertones of lack of faith in the church and the crimes carried out by them. Anchored by some stellar performances from a talented cast, including Nell Tiger Free, Sonia Braga and Ralph Ineson.

But what truly sets this movie apart from most of the modern-day horror is its unparalleled ability to instill genuine fear in its audience. From its spine-tingling moments of supernatural horror to its gut-wrenching psychological twists, the film keeps the audience of the edge of the seat from start to finish.

Each chilling revelation is revealing with truly haunting visuals that will shock even the most harden veterans of horror. The mix of grotesque images and truly creepy set-pieces is masterful throughout and the near 2hr runtime does not feel dragged out, short of one shot right towards the end of the movie I couldn’t fault a single decision here from the get-go.

In conclusion, The First Omen will solidify itself as a timeless classic and join the original movie in terrifying and enthralling audiences for decades to come. With its unforgettable performances, chilling atmosphere, and masterful storytelling, it remains a shining example of what true horror cinema is capable of achieving when at its best.

Whether you are a seasoned aficionado or a more casual viewer, The First Omen is an absolute must-see that will leave you holding your breath with fear and longing for more.
